WEP Kitchen Gardening Initiative

WEP’s initiative aims to empower women through kitchen gardening, enhancing self-sufficiency and
environmental stewardship.
Initiative Goals:
• Train women to establish kitchen gardens, reducing household expenses and promoting
healthy, organic diets.
• Address malnutrition with locally grown vegetables, saving time for families.
• Educate on organic farming, soil testing, and innovative planting techniques, including drip
irrigation and tunnel farming.
Beneficiary Selection: Using the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method, beneficiaries will be
chosen and scheduled for training sessions.
Training Program: Participants will learn about the importance of kitchen gardening, soil health, seed
selection, organic composting, and harvesting, supported by a comprehensive manual.
Gardening Modalities:
• Conventional Kitchen Gardening for areas with sufficient water.
• Drip Irrigated Gardening to conserve water.
• Tunnel Farming for off-season cultivation.
Tools and Resources:
• Tailored toolkits for each gardening type, including basic tools and specialized equipment for
drip irrigation and tunnel farming.
